September - Lots of painting!

September, thus far, has been a super busy month!

Lots of models painted!  Pictures coming soon!
I don't know if its the paint scheme, or the ease of painting larger models, but I am cranking through my Cygnar.  So far this month, I've completed 2 Centurions, a Defender, a Grenadier, 2 Arcane Riflemen, pHaley, and Lanyssa Ryssell.  I've also painted Fangtooth for my Guild Ball Union team.

I've also got lots on my painting desk, in various states of completion.  I'll likely finish more by the end of the month.

Big League for Guild Ball is running!

We've modified the rules a bit, to run without a set schedule of games.  This means removing the standard player loans rule, and replacing it with "borrow any model for a game for 3 Favor points".  This could prove to be game-breaking, but so far, no one's actually used the loan rules.  I intend to start doing so tonight.  We'll see how it goes!

So far we have 8 games played, a good start!

Quick update! Painted models!

Models completed for August:

Rowdy Rowdy Rowdy!

Somethin' strange, in your trenches?  Who you gonna call?
Trench buster 1 was a test of using a green primer to save time.  Doesn't match anything in my army now.  Not that worried, but the green I use is darker than the primer.  Bust.

Still, good try and that primer won't go to waste...terrain.  Jus' sayin', starting green helps.

Not abandoned! Just busy!

I have not abandoned this poor, neglected blog!  I've just been busy with playing the games, painting the minis and working rather than writing about any of it.  I swear!

Here's the status of the various things:

Cygnar:
Loving Cygnar in Mark III WMH.  Just won a small tournament after completing a Journeyman League.  Haley2 is still strong, shock I know.

More importantly, I'm still painting Cygnar models.  I'm currently at 322/536 points painted, and still going strong.  I just completed a pair of Trench Busters, one of which was a test of a new primer...not a successful test, sadly so I'll be sticking with Duplicolor Sandable Black/White.  My goal is to keep moving towards that moving "fully painted" target for this army.  Maybe I'll stop buying to stop the goal from moving so much....but not likely.

Guild Ball:
Still playing Alchemists, still haven't finished painting my Alchemists.  I have 9 painted models (7 Alchemists, 2 Union), so I have a playable team, but Katalyst and Smoke are still on the painting table, at 90% and 50% completed, respectively.  I have finished probably a dozen other models since I started Katalyst and just can't seem to get any progress done on him.  Naja just joined the assembled club the other night, and had his first outing on the pitch.

Also, I'll be running the Guild Ball events at Crucible 2017 in sunny Orlando, Florida!  Check back for more details or find The Crucible on Facebook!

Malifaux:
Very sadly, haven't touched it since March or so.  Want to, have the stuff and want to play, but not a big group locally.  May go to a tournament on this coming Saturday, but not sure.  Not giving up on it.

Board Games;
Mansions of Madness;  Love it.  Played it twice now, great app-integration, fairly smooth running game.
Legendary:  Doesn't matter what IP you slap on it, basic Legendary doesn't do it for me.  Shame that they wasted Big Trouble in Little China on this POS game.  Legendary Encounters games are at least interesting and not competitive.
A Game of Thrones LCG:  Still enjoying the game, trying to keep the local scene going.

Expect more posts, maybe not soon, but maybe soon.  Very decisive, I know.  Maybe just some picture posts.

July? What happened to those other months?

So three months have passed since my last post in April.  Since then, I've become a Pundit for Steamforged Games (volunteer rep), done some painting, played some games, and oh yeah a new edition of War Machine came out.

Boom.

I'm digging Mark 3.  On the wider rules changes, I love premeasuring.  Its one of my favorite things about Guild Ball.  It just makes sense to make it official, when you could basically cheat it in by using control ranges, flag measuring, etc.  Power-Up is great, especially with the number of 'jack points now.  It actually feels like 'jacks are worth using, which is a first for the game in a long time.  Other changes (no more wreck markers, no more morale, etc) are good changes too.  On the specific rules changes, the army I'm playing, Cygnar, came out smelling like roses.  In-faction units are better, more 'casters are viable, and 'jacks are awesome.  Lots of in-faction synergies to discourage mercenaries from being the best option makes me smile, despite the number of mercenaries I have.

Painting:
I've been working through my backlog of miniatures.  I now officially have a billion left unpainted :)

Not really, of course, but more than I care to count (though I do have a spreadsheet with all of the information in it).

Here's some stuff I finished for this month:

Alten Ashley, Monster Hunter Extraordinaire

Firefly - varnish not yet dried

Major Beth Maddox

Trenchers 1-6 of 15

Is it April already?

Seriously, my month of March disappeared.

New month, new goals!  But first, a quickie Crucible 2016 report.  I had fun.  I didn't win.

...

Okay, a bit more detailed, then.

As far as games played, I stood in for the bye-round on Friday night's X-Wing tournament.  This was unique, as I didn't actually bring anything for the game.  I bought a big ship (the Ghost) and played it and its shuttle at around 85 or so points.  I won one of three games, but was just playing for fun.

For War Machine, I played a pair of Iron Arena games and a whopping two tournament games of War Machine.  I lost the first round of the main event to Trolls, killing a total of 6 Runeshapers out of 4 units (so half points for 2 units) and nothing else.  I'm not sure exactly what happened, honestly, and I've blanked most of it out by now.  I then managed to be the lucky guy who got paired up in the following round, and played Mr. Jason Watt, a really nice guy, who would go on to win the whole damn thing.  He beat me in fairly short order, teaching me a few new tricks in the process, and after a two hour wait (lunch), I pulled the bye round 3.  At this point, I was pretty tilted , so I dropped.

Fortunately, this put me in a great place to go and play A Game of Thrones LCG, as it was starting right around that time.  We had 6 players (woo top 8), and I came in second with my Tyrell Lord of the Crossing Knights deck.  In the three rounds we played, I managed to get the Left-Right combo out twice, with dupes in one game.  For those who don't know the game/books, they're twin bodyguards who are mostly useless unless they are both in play, at which point they are crazy good.  Fun times.

On sunday, I skipped the Gibbet (4 years running on that) to play in Conquest LCG.  I convinced another player to try a fun deck rather than a serious deck, just by my choice of deck.  I lost all my games in the tournament (Still top 8!  WOO!) but had fun in the process and got some random prizes as well.

On the whole, the event was a blast.  I got to see some folks that I don't see often, spent some time enjoying the resort, watched some competitive Guild Ball, won free drinks in the bar, won free drinks from my/Ed's cooler, and didn't work for several days!  A big win!  The only downside was that some of my locals weren't able to make it, which put a bit of a damper on it.  Next year, we kidnap them all and take them with us!

Thoughts for next year:  I'll probably practice up on War Machine more, or simply not play in the competitive events.  I felt like I had a decent pair of lists, but not the skill to play them fully.  And I tilted way too quickly on the way it all played out, though a four hour gap in the middle of an event will do that.  Its 11 months from now, who knows what I'll be playing, what'll be available, etc, etc.  For now, back to the drawing board!

The time is up! What's the verdict?

Did I finish everything?  No.  Did I change my lists around so that everything is painted?  Also, no.

I will be playing an unfinished (but partially painted) eEiryss and a primed Aiyana and Holt unit.

Everything else is completed.  Feeling pretty good about it, too.  Stormwall was an enormous task to finish, even with the base coats on it.  Black 13th are done now, too.  The Stormwall has made his way into my eCaine list as well, taking the place of the Nyss Hunters who will be painted shortly after the Crucible...and after I finish the last two members of my Alchemists Guild Ball team.

So overall, I finished 14 models in 8 days, give or take.  Could I have done more?  Sure, but not while having lots of fun doing other stuff in the process ;)

Major Victoria Haley
Captain Allister Caine

Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team (3 models)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holtscabbards, eff those things)
Rangers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution - assembled!

And now, off to the Crucible!

STORMWALL!

It is done!

[Picture goes here to make this not such a tease]

Also, I finished the other half of the Rangers and started the Black 13th.  Hopefully finishing those three and eEiryss tonight after some GuildBall!

Progress:
Major Victoria Haley
Captain Allister Caine
Stormwall
Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team (3 models)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts) (Bow-Nyss got quivers, sword-Nyss did not get scabbards, eff those things)
Rangers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution - assembled!
Squire
Stormsmith Stormcaller

Odds are good that I'll be changing lists in such a way as to not need 10 Nyss Hunters...I don't have the time to get them done.  I might be able to finish the rest between tonight and tomorrow.  Maybe.  Either way, I'm already stoked about getting so much done!

The race continues! More like a marathon, really!

6 days until the Crucible and we're moving along at a solid pace!  Here's the latest:

Wednesday night:  Completed eCaine, Squire and Stormsmith
Thursday night:  Completed eHaley, 3 Rangers

Rangers (Leader and 5 Grunts)  (that's half of them done)
Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution - assembled!
Squire
Stormsmith Stormcaller

The Complete:
[Pics of completed models]

The Rest:

Pics of incomplete models]

I've got 21 left to paint, and I've already started 5 of them.  Everything is assembled and primed.  Unfortunately, I've got quite a full schedule for the weekend, which may derail my current momentum.  I'm going to try to minimize that, though!  We'll see how I come out!

Tuesday, March 8, 2016

Off to a good start!

[Pics of eCaine go here]

Completed Captain Caine last night, started work on Major Haley and a Stormsmith Stormcaller.  Also finished adding parts to the Squire-Raider (again, pics to come).  He'll be next on the painting block, as he goes in most, if not all, lists.

Remaining to be painted:

Major Victoria Haley
Captain Allister Caine
Stormwall
Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team (3 models)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts)
Rangers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Squire
Stormsmith Stormcaller

I'm also looking at my lists again, may have some tweaks to this within the next few days.  Maybe sneak a few already painted models into the lists, and a few unpainteds out...

Monday, March 7, 2016

The race is on!

Today is March 7th.  Crucible begins on March 17th.  My currently most pressing goal is to play two 50 point armies in the Crucible, fully painted.  I am currently 28 models away from that goal.  That's a lot.  Its crunch time.

To Be Painted:
Major Victoria Haley
Captain Allister Caine
Stormwall
Black 13th Gun Mage Strike Team (3 models)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters (Cylena and 9 Grunts)
Rangers (Leader and 5 Grunts)
Rhupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Squire
Stormsmith Stormcaller

I've already started Captain Caine, but Eiryss isn't even assembled yet.  Some are primed, some are not.  Some need a few more pieces (Nyss may or may not get quivers and scabbards).

It'll be a struggle, but I'm going for it!  Stay tuned for details and pictures!

February update: TOMB3, White Stars, and Guild Ball!

Big update time, but not much to show for it!

TOMB3:
I left off in January with $2.25 remaining, and I get to add another $25 for February, to a total of $27.25  What am I going to purchase?  No idea.  I'll have to figure that out shortly, or just let it roll until March, when I'll have no time at all :)

I haven't made it out to play Malifaux in a few weeks, but I'm still working on painting.  Here's the current status:

Dashel:  Not planning to use him at this time.
Scribe:  Not planning to use him at this time.

White Stars:
I think this may be the first time I mention these by name, but this is my Cygnar army.  Painted in drab green, with white star icons.  I've got a fair bit of it painted, but plenty of it is not.  I'm endeavoring to play fully painted at Crucible 2016, which is just over a month away.  To make matters worse, I haven't finalized any of my lists, so I don't know what exactly I have to paint.  I'm currently working on models that make the majority of my lists.  I'll probably post some pictures here sometime.

Most Recent Addition:  ACE!

Guild Ball:
My FLGS has recently started carrying Guild Ball, and several of us have bought in.  For those who don't know, its basically medieval soccer.  I purchased the Alchemists starter, along with a few other models.  So far, I have painted the ball.  Exciting!  More should be painted soon.  Pics to come.

So that's where my current projects are:  Unsure, moving target, and brand new.  Sound planning!

Boardgaming in 2016

Board games are a big hobby of mine;  a good challenge, social interaction, and generally a good time!

I've previously been introduced to a concept called the 10x10 challenge:  Play 10 games 10 times each in the coming year.  This year, I'll try it out and see how far I get.  I'll track it here, for funs.

Games I'd like to play 10 times this year:
Mysterium
Battlestar Galactica
Codenames
Pathfinder Adventure Card Game
One Night Ultimate Werewolf
Mission: Red Planet
Imperial Assault (one  complete campaign, rather than 10 times)

and 3 more to be named at a later date, when I can look at my shelf of games ;)

And as a bonus, I've already started!

Mysterium O O O
Codenames O

TOMB3 End of 2015 update - 3 down, 3 to go! Plus some bonus Neverborn! And January's TOMB3 plan!

As 2015 draws to an end, the TOMB3 is still going strong!  We're 3 months in, with 3 months left!  Cue the Bon Jovi!

In December, I completed the Guild Lawyer I plan to paint (Lawyer #2 may get paint some day, but not intending to play him for a while, so he's a low painting priority).  This picture was posted a few days ago.  Over the New Years break, I also managed to complete Lucius!  Woo!\

I've started mapping out the rest of the TOMB3, purchases and painting-wise, and I've got the following expenditures for January:  Gain $25 ($41.25 remaining), then purchase 3x Depleted ($21.00)($20.25 remaining) and purchased Teddy (I have Miss Ery ready for painting) ($18.00) This leaves me with $2.25 remaining, to carry on into February.

TOMB3 Status:

Lucius:  Painted!
Bloodwretch 1:  Painted!
Bloodwretch 2:  Painted!
Scion of Black Blood:  Painted!

Not Finished:

Dashel:  Reconsidering use after good times at tournament.  More games to decide.

Scribe:  Unsure if I intent to use him or not.

In addition to TOMB3 painting, I finished up a few Neverborn who have been sitting on my desk for a while, mostly painted:  Mister Tannen and Baby Kade!

More painting to come soon!

2015 Painting Wrap-up

Another year in the books, and I've actually done some painting this year!  I've started a few new armies, Neverborn in Malifaux and Cygnar in War Machine.

Points painted by faction, start of 2015 vs. start of 2016:

1/31/2015 1/4/2016        % Painted

Cygnar 0 112 41.18%
Mercenaries 41 44 15.66%

Resurrectionists 25 34 10.93%
Ten Thunders 0 0 0.00%
Malifaux Totals: 52 164 13.30%
Total: 236.6 464.6 16.09%
[Pictures of minis painted this year to be added here at some point]

I've still got a shitload of models to paint, as noted by the horribly low percentages above...except for the factions I started this year.  Interesting to me, I've painted significantly more this year than any other year of my miniature painting career.  Now the goal is to keep on the same track (or even ramp up!) and keep painting!

Hobby goals:
Play fully painted at the Crucible 2016:  I'm playing my Cygnar at the event this year, and I'm going to play fully painted.  I made lots of progress on this army last year, but haven't finished anything since October.  Time to jump back in.  I've got to finish a colossal, at least one warcaster, some solos...oh, and I need to figure out exactly what I want to play. list-wise.  Lists to be figured out asap.  3 months to go for painting.  Watch this space for progress.

Complete the TOMB3: I'm three months in, and still a bit behind on painting.  I'm making solid progress though.  I will be completed with the models purchased for the Tale by the end of March.  Yes, this is a second project to be completed in the same time frame as the Cygnar one.

So, apparently, I only have hobby goals through March of this year.  That's cool, a strong start to the year.  I'll add one more:
100% Painted for a War Machine Faction and a Malifaux Faction:  All the mini's I own for a faction, they will be painted.  I've got lots of unpainted.  No guarantee on which faction, though I don't intend to cheat out on this by picking a small one that I'm not playing.  For War Machine, it'll likely be Cygnar.  For Malifaux, I may end up playing Guild or Ten Thunders by the end of the year, or I'll keep up on the Neverborn.  We'll see as the year goes on.

That's it for the wrap-up.  Expect more updates!
